  • Audience & discovery — built-in networks (e.g. Substack) vs owned domain.
  • Monetization — paid subs, sponsorships, or both.
  • Deliverability & domain — custom sending domain, authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC).
  • Design control — hosted templates vs HTML/MJML pipelines.
  • Exports — can you leave with your list and archives?
